What an APFC panel does
Motors and ACs draw reactive power, which lowers the power factor. An APFC panel measures the power factor and switches capacitor steps in and out to keep it close to unity. A better power factor can avoid penalties on the electricity bill and reduces the current your transformer and cables carry.
How buyers choose
Three months of electricity bills show the current power factor and any penalty, which is the best starting point for sizing. The kVAR rating and number of steps follow from the load. Sites with VFDs, UPS or other harmonic loads usually need detuned reactors to protect the capacitors, and fast-changing loads such as welding may need thyristor switching.
