What it is
Fire-survival cable keeps a circuit working for a set time while it is exposed to fire, so alarms, public address, emergency lights, fire pumps, fire lifts and smoke extraction fans keep running while people leave the building.
Fire-survival is not the same as FRLS
FRLS cable is flame retardant and gives off less smoke, but it is not designed to keep working in a fire. Using FRLS where the fire consultant asks for fire-survival cable is a common reason for a failed fire audit.
How buyers choose
The fire consultant's specification names the test standard and survival time. Buyers then choose the cores and size, usually 1.5 to 4 sq mm for alarm circuits and larger for fire pumps. We supply the test certificates you need for the fire NOC file.
